Senator Mitch Seabaugh

Senator Mitchell W. Seabaugh, a Republican, was first elected to the Georgia state
Senate in 2000. In 2002, only his second term, his Republican colleagues elected him
the Majority Whip, a position he continues to serve in throughout his 3rd term. He
serves on the Finance Committee, the Reapportionment and Redistricting Committee,
and is Secretary of the Rules Committee. He is also a member of the Appropriations,
Judiciary, and Regulated Industries and Utilities committees.
Sen. Seabaugh serves on the Georgia Film, Video and Music Advisory Commission, as well as the
Georgia Music Hall of Fame Committee. He also serves on the Suggested Legislation Committee for the
Council of State Governments. Additionally, he serves on the Advisory Council on Energy, the Energy &
Electric Standing Committee, the Redistricting & Elections Standing Committee, and the Transportation
Standing Committee for the National Conference of State Legislators.
Sen. Seabaugh received service awards from the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia and
Georgia Municipal Association in 2005. He is the Georgia Utility Contractors Association Legislator of
the year for both 2005 and 2006. In 2003, he was honored by the Fayette Chamber of Commerce with the
Chet Wells Award for Exemplary Service.
The Georgia Family Council (GFC) recognized Sen. Seabaugh in 2004 by awarding him their Family
Honors Award for Public Policy for his efforts on behalf of Georgia families. He also received the
Family Service Award from GFC for 2003 and 2005. The Georgia Athletic Trainers Association named
Sen. Seabaugh as their Legislator of the Year in 2004.
Within his community, Sen. Seabaugh once served as the Chairman of the Coweta County Business
License and Tax Appeal Board and served on the Coweta County School Board Citizens’ Advisory
Council. He coached youth baseball in the Newnan and the Sharpsburg youth leagues, and also actively
supports band programs and once served as a chaperone and band photographer for the Northgate High
School Band.
Sen. Seabaugh formerly represented his district as an executive committee member of the Coweta County
Republican Party for six years. In 1996, he served as the Coweta County Chairman for the Bob Dole for
President campaign. He also served on the 3rd District Committee and the Georgia Republican Party State
Committee.
Sen. Seabaugh was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, also the hometown of Rush Limbaugh. In 1980, he
married the former Leah Huddleston. Mitch and Leah live in East Coweta County, with their two
children, Karen and Ryan, a daughter-in-law Jennifer and one grandson, Andrew. He and his family are
charter members of Sunrise Baptist Church in Newnan. In addition to serving in the State Senate, his
other interests include golf, reading and playing the bass guitar.
