Senator John Douglas
Senate District 17
Senator John Douglas was first elected to the Georgia State Senate from the 17th
District in 2004. Sen. Douglas has also served Georgia in the House of
Representatives from 2002-2004, and served on the Newton County Board of
Education from 1998 to 2002, which he chaired in 2002.
Sen. Douglas is a Republican, representing the citizens of Newton county and
parts of Henry, Rockdale, Spalding and Walton counties. He is currently
chairman of the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee and secretary of the Science and Technology
Committee. He also serves on the Education and Youth and Transportation Committees.
Sen. Douglas received his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from North Georgia College and
State University. He also received a Masters of Liberal Arts from Mercer University.
Sen. Douglas served in the U.S. Army from 1977-1994. He is an active member in the Newton County
GOP and American Legion Post 32. He attends Salem United Methodist Church and is director of the
Audio/Visual Team.
Sen. Douglas and his wife Susan have one daughter, Katherine.
